MAIN SUITE

BEACHSIDE CABANA

Canopy beds make the best kind of cabanas for an indoor oasis. This natural white oak frame with a layered linen headboard sparks dreams of soaking in the sunshine with sand between your toes... but not in your sheets!

To fill the volume of these sky-high vaulted ceilings and continue the scheme of natural elements, we paired the bed with large-scale wooden bead pendants hanging over extra wide carved nightstands.

A COLOR STORY

"Earning our clients' trust early on allowed us a lot of creative freedom and fun in the project. One wasn’t keen on some of our color selections at first, but with some nudging and encouragement to look beyond their comfort zone we won them over with salmon accents in the main bedroom suite and brown textured wallpaper in a guest room — both favorites now that it’s all seen together."

ALL IN THE DETAILS

A few extra square feet carved out of the bedroom created space for a nook seat complete with sconces and decorative style, while weathered materials mixed with chic accents brought our clients' sophisticated island inspiration to life.

RESORT-STYLE

Wrapped in veined slabs and millwork, this bathroom's luxuries are found in the finishes, the amenities and all that open space.

CUSTOM CLOSET

Walk-in closets are one thing, but those with a chandelier really elevate the getting-ready experience.

From morning coffee to sunset cocktails, this balcony hosts the perfect spot to sit and sip with its complimentary ocean breeze and sailboat scenes.

Layers of modern coastal charm, complex tropical colors and esteemed nautical and tiki influences feel right at home in this three-story beach house. Fun fact: Our clients are now an electric boat commute from their favorite Mai Tai bar and that carefree island lifestyle is woven throughout the clean and classic Eastern Seaboard structure of the home.

EXTERIOR

Standing tall above the channel, this seaside home takes full advantage of its surrounding scenery with wall-wide windows and a natural flow of indoor-outdoor living.

LIVING

A linear fireplace feature and steel-framed sliding glass doors border the living room space while warm wood tones and patterned fabrics soften the home’s black and white contrast.

DOUBLE DUTY

This custom leather ottoman with a wood “cuff” offers a comfortable place to rest your feet and a sturdy surface to keep your drink upright. We love the extra dimension that this form-meets-function design adds to the home.

Clean lines and coastal touches give this sophisticated space that quintessential beach house feel.

KITCHEN

CLEAN + COASTAL

The design is all in the details of this classic kitchen – cast bronze cabinetry hardware, a Spanish-style tile backsplash and the perfect hue of blue on the island – Dunn Edwards Outer Space (DE5824).

“I’m drawn to materials inspired by Spain and Morocco. I loved this splash for this modern beach home. The pattern reads Spanish but it’s on a glazed white 6x6 tile giving the splash a bright, simple clean look, perfect for this coastal kitchen!

There are times when you pull a material and it just seems perfect from the beginning. I like it, the team likes it, the client likes it, it’s easy and you know it’s going to look great! That’s how I felt about this splash.”

TABLE TALK

Fabric often drives our designs. We love this hand-blocked x pattern in the dining space and wanted to use it for the whole chair, but the fabric grade wasn't high enough for upholstery. We opted for a contrasting back accent and covered the rest of the seat in an indoor-outdoor fabric to withstand the sunlight shining through.

On a site visit after the lighting was installed, the builder Andrew Patterson asked why we hung an armadillo in the dining room… as it turns out, it’s one of the favorites!

OUTDOOR LIVING

AL FRESCO ALWAYS

The waterfront patio is an extension of the main living quarters. Beyond the home's large pocketing doors, all-weather furnishings gather guests to enjoy the coastal real estate and Southern California's mild climate.

ROOFTOP CABANA

SKY HIGH

The rooftop boasts major bonus square footage for the lounging and entertaining to continue in the open air. Between the TWO fireplaces, a fire pit and an array of comfortable seating options there’s always a spot to soak in the scenery.

SMALL BUT MIGHTY

White Thassos marble covers every wall of the third-floor bathroom in a herringbone pattern. Located between the rooftop cabana and home gym, this little space packs a powerful punch.

HEART OF A SAILOR

Years of sailing, rowing and enjoying life on and near the water made a nautical design scheme feel very natural for Cooper's bedroom. We took traditional seaside elements and inspiration and elevated them to play a part in the teen bedroom, without being too literal.

A series of painted propellors are framed as art above the leather and nailhead bed, Manzoni wood hardware on his drawers reflect the shape of keels on an old sailing schooner and layers of nubby nautical textures create an even deeper connection to the sea.

"I took Piper’s inspiration and presented to her like I would a client, that way she would be involved in the design process. We wanted a design that she could grow with. She really liked teal and bright pink, so we looked at ways we could tone it down a bit by adding turquoise pendants with blush-colored fabrics."

WORLDS AWAY

The handmade tiles in the kids bath were chosen for their southern Spain and Moroccan influence. The floor showcases a Spanish terracotta look but because we needed a thinner tile transition, we opted for a porcelain which works out great for its durability and waterproof nature.

PIPER'S PLACE

Piper's desk gets lots of love too — her favorite part is adding photos with her friends to the pinboard that spans both workspaces.

The den is one of the very hardworking spaces in the Blackband's home. The long desk is great for homework, while the lounge welcomes friends in to hang and game and converts to a guest room with the sleeper sofa. A pocket door separates this room from the kitchen and entertaining space which has served very useful in daily use and party time.

The Farm's carriage house brings the rustic charm to the modern main house and offers two additional guest suites (sleeping at least six little bodies), a bathroom and a mudroom to keep the wonder of the wilderness out where it belongs.

A soapstone sink makes a statement in the steel vanity and the floor-to-ceiling plaid mosaic hides any hints of splashing. This mudroom houses a full shower to rinse away the big messes that carefree country living can entail without tracking the evidence inside.

The kids may call dibs on this room but guests of all ages can appreciate a sweet built-in bunk design... at least around here they can! Rift white oak carries in the natural element cohesive with the rest of the home and gives the bunks their structure. The corner tower wastes no space carving out a stairway nook on the other side.

There's no gray area in this high contrast design, just a touch of muted green. Timeless subway tiles and paneling add dimension to the colorless walls while a cross pattern fills the dark floor with some fun.

These hanging headboards and soft purple linens are the bunk room's toughest competition. Paired with a geo-detailed dresser, two wardrobes and a hanging chair in each window nook, we can see why guests would choose to stay here.

Fun fact: The "hanging headboards" are mounted to the wall with z-bars but the custom curtain rods really complete the whimsical look.

CONCRETE OR QUARTZ?

Quartz slabs were mitered together to create the illusion of a thick, concrete countertop. Integrated sinks follow suit with their minimalist style mirroring the simplicity of nature.

When slabs (or other building materials) are cut at a 45 degree angle so that two come together to form a corner.

The design team approached these guest rooms with the same attention to detail as the rest of the home. We wanted the suites to feel special and thoughtful... a sense of bed + breakfast charm in a luxurious, private retreat.

ONE WITH NATURE

The serene views on display in each room were the foundation of the designs. We didn't want to bring in any colors or silhouettes that would compete with the surroundings, so we kept the furnishings low and muted. Tall headboards against the recessed walls balance the height of the room and bring coziness to the open-air space.

Layers of textiles on the beds and a mix of materials on the nightstands add so much depth to the design without distracting from the setting.
