PROJECT SHORECLIFFS REVEAL // BEDS + BATHS
ROOMS FOR REST
An entertainer’s paradise wouldn’t be complete without quiet spaces to unwind when the party’s over. Project Shorecliffs was designed with luxury suites for the homeowners and guests alike sprinkled throughout the two-story home.

MAIN SUITE
Textured wallpaper covers the back wall of the primary bedroom anchoring a contemporary canopy bed that fills the volume of the vaulted ceilings. A cluster of seeded glass pendants hang over each of the wide nightstands adding to the room’s airy aesthetic and focus on functionality.
Standing over 7 feet tall, the suite’s double-sided fireplace feature is enjoyed from the bedroom and hallway connecting the retreat space with a cozy yet modern touch.
The closet was completely customized for the homeowners to stay organized in style while showcasing their favorite collections.
The luxury of spa day is experienced every day right at home in this primary suite. A spacious floor plan offers ample room for the homeowners to use this resort-style bathroom simultaneously while also enjoying their own privacy.
Pocketing steel-framed doors create a unique and bold entry into this serene space.
Caramel-stained cabinetry cohesive with woodwork seen throughout the home caps the double vanity with concealed countertop storage.
End-matched slabs cover the vaulted vanity backsplash, countertops, and shower walls with a seamless display of stunning stone veining. The veining follows up and over a low profile vanity shelf. A linear brass pendant suspended between two shagreen-framed mirrors highlights the symmetry of the vanity wall.
Across the tumbled limestone floor, a Victoria + Albert tub sits in front of metallic patterned thassos marble creating a mesmerizing Art Deco-inspired backdrop. Layers of teardrop crystals draped like fringe on the chandelier elevate the atmosphere with a touch of glamour. Frosted glass doors on either side obscure the view into a water closet and marble stone steam shower while enhancing the double-sided symmetry of the space.
“Attention to detail and craftsmanship is evident in the transitions between luxe materials and finishing touches.”
-Wendy Blackband
— BEHIND THE SCENES —
Templating the slabs is an intricate part of the design process… especially when they’re full of exotic veins and covering all sides and the ceiling of a shower! For both the shower and vanity wall, we chose to “end-match” the slabs where possible so that the veins would continue in a natural direction (where-as “book-matched” creates a mirrored effect). Where vein matching wasn’t an option, we rotated the template pieces around until we found the most natural connection between slabs — much more practical to plan out with small-scale paper copies than the actual slabs on site!
— BACK TO THE MAIN SUITE: RETREAT —
The retreat fireplace is one of Wendy’s favorite features in the home.
“This is a great example of taking a geometric shape and a type of material that you see all the time and being able to change it up and give it a different life. We added some really heavy grout lines and we turned the materials in a different way, so to me it now kind of becomes this cool piece of art.”
- Wendy Blackband

Balconies off the retreat and main bedroom overlook the backyard entertaining space, a charming neighborhood walkway, and seaside scenery.
GUEST SUITE 1
A custom-designed wood-paneled wall intentionally brings a new texture, material, and style into this guest bedroom giving it a different personality than each of the other two guest spaces.
Glazed blue tile makes the perfect backsplash for a pool bath* with its rippling reflection of light on the organically smooth surface, and penny tiles wrapping the shower’s bench seat make for another favorite feature in the home.
*This bathroom is accessible directly from the pool yard for easy rinse offs.
GUEST SUITE 2
With deep contrasting tones and sleek straight lines, this guest room speaks to the home’s sophisticated style.
A single light fixture extends in two directions to illuminate both mirrors of this double vanity and adds balance to the dark features throughout the suite.
GUEST SUITE 3
Soft blues accent the third guest suite with embroidered Roman shades and stylish swivel rocking chairs — a must for the many grandbaby visits in store.
A mix of greige hex tiles creates a dynamic backdrop for the hair-on-hide mirrors and double-end sconces in this playful yet elevated guest bath.
LAUNDRY
Although it’s not a bedroom or a bathroom, we had to include this jewel box of a utility space. Sage green cabinetry and patterned floor tiles beautifully distract from the laundry-list of to-do’s.
MOMENTS IN BETWEEN
This window-lined floating staircase connects the first floor suites with the homeowners’ space above and adds a dramatic architectural feature to the middle of the home.
Floor-to-ceiling steel-framed windows replicate the breezeway below.

TOP 10 // INTERIOR PAINT COLORS
Let’s talk COLOR! We’re excited to see more of the statement-making color trends that we admire around the world make their way into our local mercantile, neighborhoods, and client homes. Gathering inspiration from around the globe and color wheel, our team has created this rainbow of ideas for your next project. We’re inspired to create bold and beautiful spaces for our clients, and we hope that you feel empowered to show off your bright side (or moody or soft sides), too!
Before you go covering your walls in these gorgeous paints though, keep these logistics in mind… From walls and millwork to cabinetry and doors, color can completely transform a space and evoke emotions in the design experience. That experience of color is unique to each person who sees it because we all see color a bit differently. As beautiful as color may be, it can get complicated when opposing views of a shade live under the same roof. Just as perceived hues can vary person to person, so can the shades vary room to room. Space, lighting, and shadows can affect the color of color, so for the perfect paint always swatch in your space before you buy. Now break out of your comfort zone with some of these exciting tones!
Go-to paint brands —Benjamin Moore, Dunn Edwards, Farrow & Ball
1. RADIANT REDS
Kicking the colors off in rainbow order… First up we have red! There’s no doubt this bold and striking shade stands out, creates drama, and leaves a lasting impression. Its vibrant character can be intimidating, but the designs showcased above prove that all kinds of red are ready to be the backdrop of beautiful memories made at home. Red lives across the color wheel from green which naturally makes it a contrasting and complementary pop of color to the ever-so-popular leafy earth tones. In a traditional setting, red can create an elegant atmosphere and give that classic red lip confidence. In modern design, accents of red can add excitement and energy to the more neutral elements. Farrow & Ball’s Color Curator Joa Studhlome recommends using the loud and proud hues of red (think scarlett, crimson, poppy) in entertainment spaces while reserving the more mellow shades (muted bricks and muddy burgundys) for personal, tempered rooms.
Orange is another vibrant color of the rainbow that offers much more versatility than one might imagine at first glance. The typically bright, citrus shade is bold, enthusiastic, and exudes a fresh take on fun. Softer hues, however, pack a rich history of down-to-earth vibes. From terracotta clay and copper antiques, to worn leathers and rusting metals, hints of orange can be found in very grounded and worldly designs. Its warm tones are popular in bohemian decor and sandy, sun-kissed color palettes offering a more saturated alternative to tan and beige. You can spice up your space with dashes of turmeric, paprika, cayenne, and cinnamon!
Here comes the sun! Bright and cheerful shades of yellow are known to radiate happiness, joy, and literal sunshine. It is undeniably warm in both appearance and the friendly feelings experienced. From juicy lemons, to ground mustard seeds, to dry hay bales, yellow has a natural connection to Mother Nature’s earthy palette while simultaneously offering a vivid contrast. Golden rays glow through woven fiber materials and raw wood tones while saturated accents of canary and chartreuse highlight its more exuberant side of the spectrum. Beams of this carefree color welcome optimism, creativity, and an extra zest to your home and life.
Entering the cool side of the color wheel — next we have green! Its fresh, grassy hues are synonymous with nature and a popular choice for bringing the outdoors in. Lush landscapes come alive with a range of foliage characterized by the plant varieties, current season, and local climate… a versatile palette to lean into for your own home. Deep shades of forest green add depth and sophistication (think luxurious emeralds), mid-tones of flourishing meadows manifest growth, and the dusty, sun-beaten colors of drought-tolerant succulents offer a mild alternative with mighty healing powers. There’s stability to an evergreen color scheme, yet a refreshing sense of new beginnings and renewal. The natural beauty of life-giving gardens can saturate your walls with feelings of harmony, calmness, and rejuvenation.
Looking for an even more natural connection to green hues in your home? A wood stain allows the grain patterns to show through and offers subtle variation in the color coverage. We love how this custom stain turned out for the entertainment wall in our Napa Valley meets Newport Beach renovation.
Blue is basically a neutral in our coastal environment. With its clear connection to the sea and sky, it’s a go-to for colorful cabinetry and home accents in Southern California. Splashes of deep ocean blues and turquoise waters aren’t limited to beach houses and coastal cottages though. In general, blue represents freedom and imagination opening possibilities for blue interiors anywhere and everywhere. From rich indigos and nautical navys to bright royals and soft powders, there are infinite shades of blue that can offer a breath of fresh air in your home. In addition to skylines and seascapes, blue hues may also be one of the more popular and approachable color choices for its relation to trust, loyalty, and confidence in business and commercial context. Even the timelessness of denim makes blue a classic, familiar, and long-loving style to flaunt.
6. EGGPLANT, JAM, FIG... YUM!
Straying from ROY G. BIV’s traditional colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet), we’ve chosen to showcase purple. Purple is not included in the rainbow spectrum because it doesn't have its own wavelength (yes, we Googled that for a refresh of highschool science class), but is rather a mix of red and blue light. We love purple for this complexity! Unique blends of blues, reds, pinks, and browns create sweet and savory shades of berry, eggplant, jam, and fig — just as beautiful on walls as they are tasty on the tongue! Plum is another juicy option that Wendy handpicked for her own dining room chairs fabric after striking out with clients on using the moody color. While lighter tones of lilac and lavender can surely have their place in more delicate designs, it’s the deep and saturated jewel tones that are prominent in our home presentations.
Painting it pink can be just as flirty and fun as it sounds! Playful pops of the stereotypically feminine color may bring Barbie to mind and especially in this season of Barbie mania, that would be no surprise. Lively and whimsical shades of pink are reminiscent of young memories enjoying the simplicity of toy dolls and make-believe and fairy dust, but pink goes beyond those girly, childhood years. Vibrant magentas and high fashion pinks make bold statements on sophisticated stars on and off the runway, while preppy, freshly-pressed shirts invite men into the narrative. Pink isn’t just to wear though, Barbie had it right with her Dream House! Rooms of rosy hues and rouges offer a lot to love in a sophisticated home design. Softer hues of blush and mauve give a peek of pink in more neutral settings. Raise a glass of rosé with us and let’s toast all the possibilities of PINK!
The dark side of the color conversation leads to black. It’s the ultimate choice when it comes to moodiness, mystery, and an overall power move. The darker any color goes, the more intimate it makes a space feel, so opting for black is like adding that cool leather jacket as you walk out the door. As with most colors for home design, we’re drawn to the “off” versions of the true colors. Jet black may make for an incredibly cool, lacquered glamour, but it’s the shades with more variation like midnight, onyx, and ebony that amp up the sophistication level.
Warm shades of browns and taupes are all over home design. They were in “back when” (until they “weren’t”) and they’re definitely having a moment now! The natural, earthy color ranges from deep chocolate tones to soft shades of beige, with our favorite variations of taupe laying in the middle ground. The hazy neutral offers a clean canvas for millwork and cabinetry without the stark contrast of white. Pairing the muted tones with bright whites and vibrant colors is however a juxtaposition we love to see. The brown family is versatile in the sense that it can be the backdrop of vibrant depth or blend in with its surroundings. The compounded qualities of the muddy color complements the natural elements in a home like wood and stone creating serene environments of calmness. Lighter shades of taupe can tip towards greige (the popular blend between gray and beige) but it’s the golden blonde undertones that set it apart.
Sometimes it’s the smallest amount of color that fits the bill. Not completely absent of color as white is, but as close as it gets! Soft, pale, light hues of grays and tans warm up a space with more depth and calmness and offers an escape from the harsh bright whites. In our design minds there’s nothing neutral about neutral.

BLACKBAND DESIGN’S THE LOOK // TOP 10 STYLING IDEAS FOR AUTUMN
Cozy season is upon us! Even if you live in Southern California, like us, where the weather changes are subtle, there are still many ways to bring fall touches into your home. For seasonal styling, we like to focus on interchangeable and budget-friendly elements that complement the more permanent features of a home. Switching out accessories and making intentional adjustments to decor are simple ways to make your home look and feel special for the season. Check out our team’s top ten tips for practical ways to celebrate autumn.
1. FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Refresh your front door and porch with tasteful fall items. Real or faux pumpkins, a wreath, seasonal fall potted plants, and outdoor lanterns offer festive style for a warm welcome to you and your guests. Switch out the entry door mat for a fun seasonal greeting and layer it with a plaid or patterned rug.
2. THE TEXTURED TOUCH
Bring on the boucle, fur, wool, leather and flannel! Selecting textured materials is best for fall, they are warmer and softer. Comfortable materials create a welcoming environment encouraging people to come together. Adding a chunky knit throw or introducing pillows with rich tones (maroons, oranges, greens, reds) to coordinate with your existing pillows can add that perfect fall touch. Throw in a plaid to give it the final touch!
3. CANDLES IN THE WIND
Every room can always use more candles and candlelight. We love how softer lighting and candlelight adds warmth to any room. Consider changing out your summer scents to sandalwood or fig. Candles can highlight different areas in your home. Remember, smell is one of our strongest senses so go easy on the scented candles, adding a few unscented will make everyone happy. Placing candles in front of mirrors or glass adds a little glam and romance too.
4. ENSCONCED IN VELVET
Drapery in your home can really make a big difference — this is the perfect chance to bring in more neutral, earthy, or rusty tones, plus extra volume of fabric softens any space. Drapery gives added depth to a room and can help keep your interiors warmer in the cooler seasons. Drapery frames your windows and highlights the view of fallen leaves and autumn colors.
5. FIRE IT UP
As the weather cools we can start using those fireplaces we all love! Nothing speaks of home more than a glowing, warm fire. If your fireplace has a mantel, all the more space to have fun with additional fall accessories.
6. FALL FOLIAGE
Update your greenery and florals for fall. Placing vases around the home with eucalyptus, magnolia leaves, sunflowers, dianthus, sweet asylum, dried flowers and greens, will add life to your space while also bringing nature indoors. Display seasonal fruits and vegetables on the kitchen island to incorporate fall in the kitchen. Our favorites include apples, pomegranates, pears, cranberries, pumpkins, squash, beets, and carrots. Keep it simple and earthy with branches or add color with oranges and leaves.
7. RUSTLING RUGS + RUNNERS
Add more rugs to your home to spice it up. Layering existing rugs with a hide, fur or a neutral color adds dimension and warmth into your home. Woven wool rugs add coziness to the space as well as warmth for your frosty feet! Add a runner, or two, to your hallways, bath or kitchen.
8. MOOD SWINGS
Set the seasonal mood by dimming the interior lights. Changing lighting in a room is a great way to create a softer, cozier tone for the changing seasons.
9. FOREST THROUGH THE TREES
Creating a “grateful” tree for an entry piece or a selection of branches in a tall vase. This is an affordable way to be creative and intentional! Family and guests can write a short note about a funny holiday experience, a special memory, or why they are grateful for the season. It can be lighthearted or inspirational! Read the responses at your next get together.
10. FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS
For the holidays specifically, we like to add colored landscape lighting in purples, greens, oranges and reds, greens, blues. You can add colored transparent film over existing garden spotlights or just change out the bulbs.
Additional thoughtful tip… as the holidays get nearer don’t forget to reach out to elderly neighbors to see if they could use a helping hand with decorations, blankets, food or if they just need a friend or a shoulder to lean on.

MEET THE TEAM // THE MOMMAS OF BLACKBAND
In honor of Mother's Day this weekend, we're spotlighting the moms (and dog/cat/goat-moms) on our team! Learn a little bit more about these leading ladies, their family traditions and the love they share with their kids. We also rounded up some advice they have to share for finding balance in the working-mom lifestyle and special ways you can celebrate the moms in your life this Mother's Day!
WENDY
Mom to: Cooper (15) + Piper (14)
Favorite tradition with your kids: Watching my son play video games, my daughter TikTok and doing laundry... Not!!! Not!!! Not!!! Definitely Balboa Island Yacht Club, a summer beach program that has been around for almost 100 years (I participated as a child somewhere between now and then). A beach club run by kids for kids. My kids started when they were 4 and I have watched as they were helped and encouraged by the older kids. Now, Cooper is Vice Commodore and my daughter, Piper, is Rear Commodore and they are the ones helping and leading the young ones. The circle of life, it’s a beautiful thing!
Most rewarding part of motherhood: Every phase of childhood brings new endearing memories. My husband, Greg and I always say “Oh, this is the best phase” just to be eclipsed by the next phase. The reality is every phase of motherhood has been pretty awesome. Everyone says, “wait for the teenage years.” Well, they're here and it’s incredible to watch our kids grow into young adults through the choices they make, the things they say and the friends they surround themselves with.
Best advice passed down from your mother: Well heeded advice in our current climate… My mother always tells me to stay enthusiastic (even when it’s not so easy). I tell my kids that it’s easy to be a good person when things are great. The real test of character is how one handles themselves in the challenging times.
A “mother’s must-have” in your home: Botanical Fragrances oil and a peaceful bedroom... together these are my sanctuary.
What your kids love about you (surprise!): "I love how she will always be there for me and how she can put up with me and how she is always loving." - Cooper // "My mom is very caring, kind and encourages us to be the best human we can be. She is super supportive and is an amazing leader. I'm so thankful to have her as my mom and she is a great person to look up to." - Piper
MARY
Mom to: Charlotte (13) + Harper (7)
Favorite tradition with your kids: Sunday morning coffee. The girls make it and make themselves hot cocoa and toast and bring it into our bedroom in the morning.
Most rewarding part of motherhood: Watching my kids have the “lightbulb” moments, seeing them make connections, being proud of themselves, then teaching someone else.
A "mother's must-have" in your home: A large hat, a cool cool beverage and a lounge spot in a sunny yard.
What your kids love about you (surprise!): "She has patience, she always figures out a problem. She is young at heart and willing to try new things. I admire her work ethic and follow through." - Charlotte // "She is so kind and nice. She is so cool. I'm thankful to have her, and I don't say it enough but I LOVE HER!" - Harper // Bonus note from your husband: "The most dedicated, tender and loving mom to my girls. She takes the time even when time is short. Everyone has one but she is my favorite." - Daniel
TRACY
Mom to: Dutch (12) + Valentina (9)
Favorite tradition with your kids: Family Vacations
Most rewarding part of motherhood: Watching their personalities grow into who they will become.
Best advice passed down from your mother: Tell them you love them every day especially the days that they may have broken the rules and you have to reprimand them.
A “mother’s must-have” in your home: Fashion is a close to second to my love of home design so having a closet filled with fun, eclectic things makes me very happy!
What your kids love about you (surprise!): "I enjoy your kindness, respect how hard you work and love your sense of humor." - Dutch // "I love your style, you are joyful and you care about others." - Valentina
ASHLEY T
Momma-to-be: Baby T coming June 2020
A tradition you hope to start with your family: Sunday Beach Days!!
A trait you hope your baby inherits from you or your husband: I hope she inherits my husband's good cooking skills.
Best advice passed down from your mother: Take time for yourself, be grateful for what you have, there is a solution to every problem, this too shall pass.
A “mother’s must-have” in your home: A comfy rocking chair with a footrest - it’s all about the footrest.
How your husband knows you'll make a great mother (surprise!): "She has the heart of a lioness. Fierce yet affectionate, she is selfless and genuine." - Justin
SHOUT OUT TO THE MOMS OF FUR BABIES, TOO
KENDALL + HONEY
EMMY + ROSIE
MEGAN + DUDE
RYLEE + KIKI
SIERRA + THOR
RACHEL + IGGY
ASH P + HURLEY
MARY + ZOE
KATE + RHETT
ASHLEY T + KITTY
Favorite thing about raising a fur-child: These mommas agree that their pets' excitement to see them, their unconditional love and their sweet, sweet snuggles are the highlights of fur-child motherhood.
TOP TIPS FOR FINDING PEACE IN THE WORKING MOM JUGGLE
Let go of the "mom guilt." There's not one right way to mother (or do anything for that matter), so freeing yourself from the expectations and comparisons of others can take a big weight off your shoulders and allow you to focus on the task at hand.
Be present where you are. A lot of that "mom guilt" or anxiety comes from worrying about what you're not doing. Concentrate your attention to what you are doing and understand that even super-moms cannot be in two places at once. You'll likely be more productive with your "all-in" attitude and end up with more time or energy to enjoy those other things on your mind.
Talk it out. Communicating with your family, boss and coworkers about expectations for the many responsibilities you manage keeps everyone on the same page. So much stress lives in our minds and just needs to be let out!
Stick to a schedule. Not every part of your life needs to be regimented, but planning out events, tasks, deadlines and expectations ahead of time can help keep everyone on track. Having a work schedule and a family schedule can help ease your mind as to what is happening with your loved ones while you're hard at work and vice-versa.
Plan out meals. A hungry human is rarely a happy human so planning out meals ahead of time can cut the cravings before the tempers kick in (and we're not just talking about the kids... we're all guilty of being a little "hangry" at times). Preparing meals a few days at a time can eliminate some of the prep time each night, stocking up on groceries over the weekend (with a list!) can alleviate the stress of missing an ingredient half way through cooking and delegating chef responsibilities around the family can build new skills and memories.
Be proud of who you are. Celebrate the big and little wins in life and be proud of the hard-working, human-raising, trailblazing, self-sacrificing, forward-thinking leader that you are.
