Project Newport Harbor PART TWO!
DINING ROOM + LIVING ROOM REVEAL
Dining Room
We love grasscloth! In this room we added a slate blue gray grasscloth wallpaper above the wainscot that really adds an extra pop of color and richness to this room. This room is situated across from the living room so it was important for these two rooms to “talk” to each other. The gray custom host and hostess chairs pair nicely with the custom blue area rug and drapery. This room has a formal dining room feel without being too stuffy.
Living Room
This is the first room you see upon entering the home and we had the opportunity to create a true living room separate from the family room. This room has a great sense of symmetry and balance with the furniture framing the main focal point of the room, the fireplace. With a mix of custom pillow fabrics and vintage one of kind fabrics this space harmonizes well with the rest of the California casual feeling throughout the home.

MASTER BEDROOM REVEAL
It’s reveal day! Today we’re sharing one of our recent designs, Project Newport Harbor! The home owner wanted to create a bright and functional home for their growing family that incorporated neutrals with pops of blues to create a sophisticated yet inviting environment.
We wanted the master bedroom to be the ultimate retreat. We added metallic cork wallpaper to the wall behind the bed to create contrast and add texture to the space. The bed frame was a custom piece that fit around their ergo bed. The window treatments throughout the master suite were all custom, motorized and can be controlled from an app on the home owner’s iPhone. Over 8 different fabrics in the master bedroom were carefully chosen to harmonize together creating a peaceful space that also feels fresh and coastal. Home build + design by Graystone Custom Builders.
Colorful Front Doors
Say hello to colorful front doors! Front doors are like first impressions, you only have one chance to make a bold statement! A colorful door is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to add instant curb appeal. It adds another layer of personality and helps make your home unique. When selecting your color, it’s important to pick a shade that will complement your home’s existing style and features. Remember to test, test, test! Paint a few samples on your front door and observe over the course of a day to see which shade speaks to you.
Gray is a classic, traditional color representing knowledge and authority. This perfect neutral has a stabilizing effect on other colors, downplaying rich bold hues and enlightening softer tones. You simply can’t go wrong with a gray front door! One of the most common questions we are asked is “What color is the front door from Project Newport Heights?” so we reached out to our friends at Graystone Custom Builders and they let us know it was painted in Galveston Gray by Benjamin Moore.

Ever since Pantone put pink on our radar, we can’t get enough of it! It’s one of the hardest shades to work into a design project because of its girlish charm, but we know not all men are opposed. Bright shades of pink can make us feel young and vibrant while blush tones create a gentle and calming mood. If you’re ready to make a statement and stand out on your block, this is the color for you.

Blue is one of our favorite colors – it’s a nod to our coastal surroundings and plays off the natural elements of the sea and sky. It is strongly associated with tranquility and calmness, suggesting a serene retreat behind closed doors.

Green is the go-to shade to bring your landscape to life. The color green has great healing power and it is the most restful color for the eyes. It’s a refreshing color with a natural balance of cool and warm undertones making it easy to pair with a variety of different home styles.

Yellow is a cheerful way to welcome guests into your home. Representing the sun, a bright shade of yellow can bring happiness, warmth and energy to your front door. This color is best suited for exteriors with neutral tones like whites, grays, and shades of brown.

Orange is a great color to complement modern or contemporary homes (think Palm Springs). It’s a vibrant, rich color that screams for attention and gives your home a lively focal point. A bright shade of orange can give a sense of playfulness to a neutral home.

Safari Chic
It’s a jungle out there and we can’t seem to get enough of this trend! From zebra print rugs to cowhide seating, safari inspired decor has been popping up all over the place. The mixture of neutral fabrics and textures (think khaki) serve as the perfect backdrop for a bold statement with animal print. Incorporating elements like natural textures, faux fur, hides, and leather detailing give your space a collected and worldly vibe. To embrace this trend we’ve selected some of our favorite ways to take this look to the next level!
Blackband Goes Wild
Here are some of the ways we’ve added safari chic decor into our own designs!
Animal artwork adds a modern touch to our Newport Heights dining room.
Cheetah print pillows and leather ottomans in our Peninsula Point living room.
Zebra barstools add contrast and interest to our bright white Dover Shores kitchen.
Zebra print stools with reclaimed wood bases from our Newport Westcliff home.
Faux taxidermy gives this bedroom a masculine edge from our Coto De Caza home.
Our favorite trend of all, a zebra print hide layered on top of a natural fiber rug in our Newport Heights home office.

Spring Flowers inspired by Pantone Colors of the Year
Adding an accent color is a great way to bring a pop of color into your home without overwhelming the space. This spring, Pantone is all about color. Their 2016 color report blends the muted colors of the year — rose quartz and serenity — with vivid brights like fiesta and buttercup.
According to Pantone, “Colors this season transcend cultural and gender norms. Vivid brights give way to excitement and optimism, though quiet stability prevails in this season’s palette.”
To help bring these colors into your home, FTD created ten mood boards of the season’s Pantone colors and their matching spring flowers. If you like Serenity, try decorating your home or garden with mascara, forget-me-nots, and bluestar. If you enjoy brighter colors like fiesta, use poppies, amaryllis, or beardtongue. Whatever color you choose, the colorful flowers are sure to liven up your space!
Pantone Rose Quartz 13-1520 “Rose Quartz, a persuasive yet gentle tone…conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Like a serene sunset, flushed cheek or budding flower, Rose Quartz reminds us to reflect on our surroundings during the busy but lighthearted spring and summer months.”
Pantone Peach Echo 16-1548 “Peach Echo [is] a shade that emanates friendlier qualities, evoking warmth and accessibility. It is an all-encompassing, tempered companion in the playful orange family.”
Pantone Serenity 15-3919 “Weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, Serenity comforts with a calming effect, bringing a feeling of respite even in turbulent times. A transcendent blue, Serenity provides us with a naturally connected sense of space.”
Pantone Snorkel Blue 19-4049 “A maritime-inspired blue, Snorkel Blue plays in the navy family, but with a happier, more energetic content. The name alone implies a relaxing vacation and encourages escape. It is striking yet still, with lots of activity bursting from its undertones.”
Pantone Buttercup 12-0752 “While the majority of Spring/Summer palette trends toward calmness, a few diversions from the theme emerge that offer a contrast. With Buttercup, designers reveal a shining beacon transporting its wearer to a happier, sunnier place.”
Pantone Limpet Shell 13-4810 “A shade of aqua that leans toward the green family, Limpet Shell is clear, clean and defined. Suggestive of clarity and freshness, its crisp and modern influences evoke a deliberate, mindful tranquility.”
Pantone Lilac Gray 16-3905 “As in most any season, the need for neutrals arises. Essentially a basic, the subtlety of the lilac undertone in Lilac Gray adds a distinctive edge to this classy gray shade.”
Pantone Fiesta 17-1564 “The high energy Fiesta is a harbinger of excitement, encouraging free-spirited exploration to unknown but welcoming locales. A strong and fiery, yellow-based Red, the vivid Fiesta provides a stark contrast to the calming, softer nature of this season’s palette.”
Pantone Iced Coffee 15-1040 “A transitional color that will take us through the seasons, Iced Coffee manifests as another strong neutral for the season. With its natural earthy quality, the softness and subtlety of Iced Coffee creates a stable foundation when combined with the rest of this season’s palette.”
Pantone Green Flash 15-0146 “Green Flash calls on its wearer to explore, push the envelope and escape the mundane, radiating an openness that combines with the rest of the palette in unexpected but serendipitous ways. The popularity of this brilliant hue is representative of nature’s persistent influence even in urban environments, a trend continuing to inspire designers.”

Project San Clemente | Part Three
LIVING ROOM & POWDER BATH REVEAL
The last of our Project San Clemente reveal is here! If you haven’t seen part one and part two, click the links to see the rest of the house! It took a lot of work to get from before to after, we painted the walls in Dunn Edwards ‘Cool December’ to freshen up the space and added hardwood flooring throughout the main floor. We removed the etched sea life inspired glass windows on the main floor and replaced them for a cleaner look.
The fireplace was refaced with venetian plaster and we created a storage space to display decorative wood. We took out the existing built in and replaced it with a cozy window seat. Venetian plaster was also used to replace the slate and wood on the walls in the living room, this allowed us to reveal a window that had previously been covered up!
