Wendy Blackband is spotlighted in the Fall 2020 issue of Traditional Home magazine as a rising star designer! One of ten "NEW TRADS" in the class of 2020, she is recognized for adding her own unique twist to classic interiors.

Wendy has instilled in our design team the importance of mixing styles to keep homes current. Pairing old with new, light with dark, sleek with textured and calm with colorful are just a few ways we create unique spaces for our clients that stand the test of time. We focus on how rooms will be used by the homeowners to make these works of art just as functional as they are beautiful.

Thank you Trad Home editor Sally Finder for recognizing Wendy among this talented group of designers!

We are incredibly honored to share that the Fall issue of Trad Home is officially available on newsstands and features Project Santa Ynez (aka The Farm) on the COVER and in a stunning spread inside!! Wendy Blackband is also spotlighted in the magazine as a rising star designer in the New Trads class of 2020!

THE COVER

ON THE COVER!! Of a major shelter magazine!! This is a real "pinch me" moment for the Blackband team and the cherry on top of an incredible project.

We want to extend a huge THANK YOU to the special people that made this possible...

The creative teams at Patterson Custom Homes and Brandon Architects for inviting us in to this passion project

Manolo Langis for capturing the home in all its beauty

Ink PR Group for the incredible placement

Traditional Home magazine, editor-in-chief Jiill Waage, writer Sally Finder-Weepie and style + design editor Krissa Rossbund for sharing this amazing story

and of course our team at Blackband Design -- it truly is a team effort!

THE SPREAD

Project Santa Ynez is actually the home of builder Andrew Patterson and his beautiful family (pictured in the magazine). If you follow our journey on Instagram, you'll notice we work with Patterson Custom Homes on several of our client homes in Newport Beach, so our teams have racked up years of experience collaborating together. Getting the opportunity to work with Andrew on his personal home outside of our usual territory brought a whole new level of creativity, passion and adventure to this design and build process.

The architect, Chris Brandon of Brandon Architects, is a great friend of Andrew's and another local colleague of ours. His expertise in custom home design and vision for Andrew's property set the stage for an extraordinary build, inside and out. Wendy Blackband and Rachel Azzolina of our Blackband Design team jumped right in to join the guys' passion for this project and completed the home with earthy materials, laidback furnishings and personal style for the Patterson family's ideal oasis.

From the home’s contemporary design full of natural textures to its views of open skies and rolling hills scenery, this countryside retreat is as dreamy as it gets and this article (online and shown below) portrays it all perfectly!!

Fresh American Style Feature

FRESH AMERICAN STYLE BY ANNIE SELKE  FEATURE!

We recently sat down with Annie Selke for their Fresh American Style Blog to give some behind the scene details about Blackband Design, click here to check out her blog for more design inspiration!

WE’RE CRUSHING ON: BLACKBAND DESIGN

You’d be hard-pressed to find a design lover who doesn’t let loose a sigh of dreamy appreciation when she sees a gorgeous coastal design. Which is probably why we felt like we were indulging in some midday meditation when we first came across the work of Blackband Design, owned by Greg and Wendy Blackband (Greg is the financial, logistics, and publicity brains, while Wendy is the head designer). Easygoing yet sophisticated, upscale yet unpretentious, classic yet thoroughly modern, Blackband Design interiors all exude a laid-back confidence and a welcoming ambience, thanks to their mix of the traditional with more eclectic pieces like reclaimed wood, vintage linens, ethnic textiles, and antique or flea market finds that practically tug at your sleeve and call out for conversation.

We sat down with Wendy—a lifelong world traveler and a frequent guest lecturer in the UCLA Interior Design and Architecture program—to talk about her inspiration, items that will never go out of style, and her go-to advice for decorating.

Fresh American: What’s your earliest memory of being interested in design?

Wendy Blackband: My dad is a custom home builder, so I always had home building in my blood since I was a little girl. My mom is a professor at UCLA in the interior design and architecture program. I traveled all over the world with my mom. She inspired me so much growing up, teaching me about design, art, and culture—all these wonderful, fantastic things. I feel these experiences with both my mom and dad have turned me into the type of designer that I am today.

FA: What has been the biggest change in your design approach or aesthetic over the years?

WB: Things are taking a more modern twist in the design world, so we have been adding that element into our designs while keeping consistent with our bohemian coastal roots.

2128Seville33 copy

FA: What’s your greatest challenge as a designer?

WB: Designing my own home! Have you ever heard of the saying “Cobblers’ children have no shoes?” That’s my home. Too much inspiration and not enough time!
FA: Which design “rule” or idea do you refer back to over and over? Which have you tossed out?

WB: I am not big on having everything in the home matching. I am constantly mixing things up—I like to mess things up a little bit. . . . I understand balance and composition of colors and patterns, so I really try to make it interesting while still having some structure.
FA: What are your go-to sources for inspiration?

WB: I start by Googling everything, even destinations like Bali, to pull inspiration. I also go on Pinterest, Houzz, and Instagram. I still like flipping through magazines as a main source of inspiration, to find things like colors or light or flowers that catch my attention. It’s not even so much looking for the furniture that early on; it’s more important to figure out what the vibe and feel of the space will be.

4-Via-Giada-010-copy copy

FA: Which design trend or idea do you wish would go away? Which design trend or idea are you loving right now?

WB: Love: mixed metals, and mixing different woods. I also love bringing back some jewel tones. Another one of my favorites is mixing vintage with new; style that is current but has history to it (new vintage and legacy items). Go away: monochromatic interiors. I want more color!
FA: Which designers or blogs can you not get enough of?

WB: Ralph Lauren. The style is always classic and timeless.
FA: In your opinion, what’s one thing that will never go out of style?

WB: Indigo blue, chestnut-colored suede, and turquoise beads!
FA: What’s the one item in your home you couldn’t live without?

neustadt-82 copy

WB: My husband, my kids, and a good book.
FA: If you were to chuck design for another career, what would it be?

WB: A photographer for National Geographic.
FA: Which book is on your nightstand, and which movie is tops in your Netflix queue right now?

WB: I’m always reading. The best books I’ve read recently would be F. Scott Fitzgerald: A Life in Letters,Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and My Man Jeeves by P. G. Wodehouse. One of my favorite things to watch on Netflix right now is Sherlock. I’m also a big fan of Veep on HBO.

If you follow us on Instagram and through our Blog, you surely must know of our longtime friends, Graystone Custom Builders. Mike and Betty Terry are an insanely talented husband and wife team out of Newport Beach who do it all when it comes to building custom homes from the overall design, build, and material specifications. We have been lucky to work with them on a number of different projects, and we enjoy coming up with beautiful interior furnishings to complement their style.

For our Project Bayshores, the homeowner was already contracted with Graystone Custom Builders to do the home design, material specification and build. The homeowner hired Blackband Design four months prior to completion to do the space planning, furnishings and window treatments. Graystone did an amazing job with the details of the home, every room has special and different cabinet details designed by Graystone’s design team. From exposed wood beams to painted white brick and reclaimed wood accent walls, we had the clean slate that designers dream of!

master-retreat

The goal for the master bedroom was to create a relaxing retreat with a coastal bohemian vibe. We thought a canopy bed would look great in this room paired with the tall ceilings and exposed wood beams. We brought in a pair of larger nightstands to flank the bed. We wanted to keep the bedding neutral and bring in color through the decorative pillows, drapery, and a window seat. Graystone designed a beautiful fireplace surrounded in painted white brick, we wanted to create a small scale seating area in front of the fireplace to complete the room. The Master Bathroom is what makes this retreat really shine, Graystone designed and built the bathroom of our dreams! Boasting a large reclaimed wood accent wall behind the double vanity, a big tub to soak in, and a show-stopping herringbone marble shower.

Kid-Tastic

The bunk room was nearly completed when we were brought on the job and we couldn’t have planned it better ourselves! Graystone outdid themselves with the design and build of this room, creating an inviting space for the clients future grandkids to enjoy. The Graystone design team designed the beds with the top bunk high enough to allow an adult to sit comfortably on the bottom bunk. They double vaulted the ceiling to create cozy upper bunks with built in lighting for each bed. Our client wanted the room to have a 60s surf vibe, while making sure the design of the room wasn’t gender specific. We brought in soft shades of blue, gray, and a pop of orange for color. Graystone actually built the lifeguard chair and the client owned the vintage surfboard which finished off the room while maintaining the casual coastal feel!
